Congrats! It’s nearly the end of the school year and that beautiful summer break is just around the corner. You just have one more hurdle to jump…exam season. Even though it might seem like an overwhelming task, you CAN get through it successfully if you just prepare yourself properly beforehand. Having helped numerous students get through this time of year, as well as go through many exam seasons myself, I’ve written down a list of (hopefully) helpful tips to help you survive this exam season!
- Use your agenda
Remember that weird book your teacher gave you at the beginning of the school year that may, for many of you, end up shoved in the back of your locker or bag? Well if you haven’t been using it yet, now is the time to pull out your agenda and begin to use it! I recommend writing down exactly what concepts you will be reviewing each night and for what course. For example, if you have to prep for Grade 9 science and plan to study chemistry on the weekend write down, “Saturday- Ionic and covalent bonding, Bohr-Rutherford diagrams, etc. Sunday- physical & chemical properties, etc.” That way, you can rest assured you will be covering all the topics that might pop up on your exams.
- Coffee and all night cramming = disaster
Say it’s about 8pm the night before your English exam and you feel a little nervous, but pumped. You’ve made yourself a huge cup of coffee and you are ready to pull an all-nighter. Doesn’t sound like a bad idea at first, considering the English is exam is first thing in the morning, but TRUST ME, it’s a recipe for disaster! Around 1am, you will start yawning and feeling really out of it, and if you continue to drink coffee to push through this tiredness, you risk riddling your body with anxiety from the caffeine. A better alternative? Stop studying around 10:30-11:00pm, and get a proper night’s sleep. Regarding coffee, if you don’t normally drink coffee, I would not drink anything past 3:00pm, and if you are a regular drinker, put the caffeine away around 6:00pm latest. Your clear mind the next morning on the exam will thank you for it J
- Appreciate your hard work!
Students can sometimes let their anxious thoughts run wild, and spend hours worrying if they know enough information for their exams or if they have done enough to prepare. If you catch yourself doing this, just stop what you are doing and remind your anxious mind what you HAVE done thus far. See yourself as being successful on your exam, because you know what? All that studying will help bring you success and that is something you should appreciate about yourself! A bit of positivity during exam season never hurts.
As a final note, I’d like to remind you that exam season will pass, and all you have to do is try your best, stay organized and it will be over with quicker than you realize! Best of luck!
