Senior Writing Tutor & Organizational Coach
My name is Brittany Cohen, and I am an enthusiastic, dedicated tutor with a background in education, youth and community development, and research. I graduated from the University of Massachusetts
Amherst with an Honours B.A. in Psychology, and I am currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. I am in the Curriculum, Teaching & Learning program with a specialization in Comparative, International Development & Education. My research focuses on the Ontario curriculum and newcomer youth. I am proposing that a more holistic focus be integrated into the curriculum to enhance learning and development and to reach students of various backgrounds and abilities.
Before starting my master’s program, I earned my TEFL certification and taught ESL in Seoul, South Korea for a year. I taught Kindergarteners in subjects ranging from Math to Science and Theater, as well as Grades 1 through 8 in subjects including Language Arts, Reading, Writing and Communication. I also tutored children of various ages after school. Upon returning from Seoul I had the opportunity to work as the Learning Center Director for a nonprofit organization called FIVER. I worked with children ages 8 to 14 and developed a curriculum to enhance literacy through fun and engaging lessons and activities.
In addition to teaching, I have experience conducting academic research and writing research reports. During my undergraduate studies I worked in two psychology research labs, and I recently completed a contract with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in the Child, Youth and Family Services program. I have also done extensive research as it pertains to my master’s thesis. I enjoy the research process and truly believe that writing a research paper can be fun, exciting, and rewarding.
In my spare time I enjoy exercising (including Pilates, aerobics, biking and kickboxing), reading fiction novels, and playing board games. I also volunteer at the Romero House, a refugee resettlement centre, where I enjoy spending time with newcomer families and friends. I have a passion for travel and have had the privilege of visiting 26 countries in 4 continents (Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia). I am excited to work with you!
