Primary Junior Teacher
My name is Carolynn and I am an OCT certified teacher. I obtained my Bachelor of Science (double major in Human Biology and Spanish) from the University of Toronto. In 2014, I began my teaching career in the private sector and then transitioned into the public education system. I have experience teaching kindergarten, grades 2-4 and primary and junior special education classes. My special education pathway started when I obtained two LTO’s in the primary and junior divisions. In those particular LTO’s, I modified my teaching practices to help best support students with learning disabilities and created an environment that encouraged risk taking and perseverance in order to build student confidence and therefore achieve success. I also created IEP’s by carefully observing my students’ needs, strengths and learning styles along with incorporating parental input. Overall, my classroom experience has allowed me to teach children of different ages, cultural backgrounds and diverse academic needs.
In all of my teaching experiences, I facilitate a positive learning environment by encouraging student participation, including student interests in lessons and providing differentiated instruction and learning. I also work towards fostering a growth mindset philosophy in the classroom. My instructional strategies include the use of a variety of manipulatives or hands-on tasks to help learn new concepts, presenting inquiry based learning activities, and using technology. These skills have also been used to help students who I have tutored in the past improve and achieve their learning goals.
I continue to learn outside the classroom by frequently enrolling myself in workshops, conferences and additional qualification courses. I’ve obtained Part 1 AQ’s in Kindergarten, Primary/Junior Math, Reading and Special Education. I also have an Additional Basic Qualification in Intermediate General Science. I recently participated in a professional learning day which included areas of focus on assistive technology, math, IEP’s and ADHD. I am also working on completing my Master’s of Education in Curriculum Studies at OISE. Overall, my professional learning allows me to continue to implement new ideas and current methodologies into the classroom to motivate students to engage in their learning. I truly consider myself a lifelong learner and will continue to participate in professional development to stay current with best practices in education.
When I am not immersed in teaching, I stay active and healthy by running, playing sports and doing yoga. On my spare time, I enjoy listening to live music, trying out new restaurants and attending various city festivals. I also love to travel the world and have seen many exotic places!
