Primary / Junior Special Education Teacher and Senior English Specialist
Maria received her undergraduate degree in English from the University
of Toronto. She later went on to receive her Bachelor of Education at
the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education, specializing in Primary/Junior
divisions. Currently, Maria is pursuing her Masters of Art in English
literature at York University. She has plans to pursue her PhD, specializing
in Children's Literature.
Growing up in a family of educators, Maria has always had passion for teaching. For over ten years, she has had experience teaching preschoolers to adults in a variety of roles, including as a swimming coach, art instructor, camp counsellor, and piano teacher. As a concurrent education graduate, she has also had experience directly in the classroom for five years, including special education and kindergarten. Being the eldest sibling in a large family has allowed Maria the experience to grow into a patient educator, with a strong sense of dedication to her students. Having a wide variety of interests, her ability to connect with students is a strong part of her teaching methodology, and has left lasting impressions on those she has taught in the past. She looks forward to mentoring new students, and helping them gain the confidence they need to succeed in school. Additionally, Maria is trained on the Direct Instruction Reading Mastery and Connecting Math Concepts Programs and she enjoys guiding students who are needing remedial support.
As a writer and artist, Maria has published several articles, illustrations, poems, and photography for various magazines, books, apps, and retail stores. Maria is currently volunteering with the York Catholic District School Board's annual "Battle of the Books" competition as a contributor and judge. She is also the assistant editor for the Journal of Pre-Raphaelite Studies at York University.
When not teaching, you will find Maria reading, playing piano, illustrating, or cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs.
